Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body that holds everything together. It’s found in your bones, ligaments, tendons, connective tissues and skin, and plays a role in your overall health. The word collagen actually comes from the Greek word “kolla” meaning glue.
Collagen is composed of a series of amino acids, including glutamine, arginine, proline and glycine. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein and are essential for synthesising hormones and moving chemical messages throughout the body.
In order to form collagen, these amino acids undergo a grouping process, forming long collagen chains. These chains arrange themselves side by side and bind together into fibrils, or three-dimensional helices. Many of the unique capabilities of collagen – for example, being elastic enough to be stretched without tearing – are due to the unique properties of these triple helices. They then bind closely together to form a dense sheath of cells and act as the foundation of body materials, whether it’s in your epidermis (upper layer of skin), your gut, or elsewhere.
Your body is capable of making collagen and does so quite well throughout the first few decades of life. But age, environmental factors and lifestyle choices like smoking, a poor diet, alcohol consumption and sun exposure can deplete collagen stores and slow down its production. This can accelerate ageing, both internally and externally.
When you begin supplementing with collagen, your body is able to take the associated amino acids, vitamins and minerals and deliver them throughout the body. In turn, this can work to form new collagen production.
Dose & Co collagen products are made using either bovine collagen (from cows) or marine collagen (from fish). Bovine collagen is made from type 1 and 3 collagen, which are the most abundant types found in the human body. Type 1 and 3 collagen both help to maintain the structure and health of skin, hair and nails. Marine collagen contains type 1 collagen only.
Dose & Co sustainably sourced within the EU.
Yes. Both our bovine and marine collagen powders are hydrolyzed – this means they’re also called collagen peptides. Hydrolyzed collagen has been processed into tiny particles so that it’s more readily absorbed into your body, specifically your intestines.
