Collagen FAQs

What is collagen?

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body that holds everything together. It’s found in your bones, ligaments, tendons, connective tissues and skin, and plays a role in your overall health. The word collagen actually comes from the Greek word “kolla” meaning glue.

What is collagen made up of?

Collagen is composed of a series of amino acids, including glutamine, arginine, proline and glycine. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein and are essential for synthesising hormones and moving chemical messages throughout the body.

In order to form collagen, these amino acids undergo a grouping process, forming long collagen chains. These chains arrange themselves side by side and bind together into fibrils, or three-dimensional helices. Many of the unique capabilities of collagen – for example, being elastic enough to be stretched without tearing – are due to the unique properties of these triple helices. They then bind closely together to form a dense sheath of cells and act as the foundation of body materials, whether it’s in your epidermis (upper layer of skin), your gut, or elsewhere.

Does my body produce its own collagen?

Your body is capable of making collagen and does so quite well throughout the first few decades of life. But age, environmental factors and lifestyle choices like smoking, a poor diet, alcohol consumption and sun exposure can deplete collagen stores and slow down its production. This can accelerate ageing, both internally and externally.

How does collagen supplementation work?

When you begin supplementing with collagen, your body is able to take the associated amino acids, vitamins and minerals and deliver them throughout the body. In turn, this can work to form new collagen production.

What types of collagen does Dose use, and where is it sourced from?

Dose & Co collagen products are made using either bovine collagen (from cows) or marine collagen (from fish). Bovine collagen is made from type 1 and 3 collagen, which are the most abundant types found in the human body. Type 1 and 3 collagen both help to maintain the structure and health of skin, hair and nails. Marine collagen also contains type 1 and type 3 collagen.

Dose & Co sustainably sourced within the EU.

Do you use hydrolyzed collagen?

Yes. Both our bovine and marine collagen powders are hydrolyzed  – this means they’re also called collagen peptides. Hydrolyzed collagen has been processed into tiny particles so that it’s more readily absorbed into your body, specifically your intestines.

Can men use collagen as well?

Yes! All Dose & Co collagen products are completely unisex and designed to support hair, skin and nails.

How many grams of collagen does Dose & Co contain per serving?

All Dose & Co products contain 10 grams (10,000 milligrams) of collagen per serving.

Can I have more than one serving of collagen per day?

Yes! Our marine collagen products can be taken twice a day and our bovine collagen products can be taken up to three times a day.

Can the collagen creamer be used in drinks other than coffee?

Absolutely! Our collagen creamer can be added to black tea, herbal tea, hot chocolate, matcha, smoothies, milo, water, milk – the choices are endless!

When do my products expire?

All of our products have an 18-month shelf life – please check the expiry date on the side of the tub.

Can my child consume collagen?

Every child has different nutritional needs – we recommend you speak with your health care provider if you are unsure.

Can I buy a vegan collagen powder?

No. Only animal proteins contain collagen, so it is impossible to create a complete form of vegan collagen.
